About MP Materials

MP Materials runs the only working rare earth mine in the United States, at Mountain Pass in California. Rare earths are the raw material for the powerful magnets inside electric motors, wind turbines and defense equipment. China controls most of the world's supply, which is what makes a single American mine strategically interesting.

The case for and against

Both sides of the story, in plain English.

Bull case
  • Revenue Nearly Doubled

Revenue reached 108.5 million dollars in the quarter ended June 2026, against 57.4 million dollars a year earlier. That is an 89 percent jump. The core product, a rare earth material called NdPr, went from 25.0 million dollars to 94.4 million dollars of sales, close to four times bigger.

  • The Only One In America

If the United States wants rare earth magnets without depending on China, this is currently the only domestic mine that can supply them. That position attracts government interest and long term supply agreements that a normal mining company would never get. The company is also building magnet manufacturing rather than just digging up ore.

Bear case
  • It Does Not Make Money Yet

Despite revenue nearly doubling, the company still loses money, with margins around negative 14.6 percent. Mining and magnet plants swallow enormous amounts of cash before they pay anything back. Until that flips, growth alone does not make this a profitable business.

  • One Customer Is Forty Percent

A single customer accounts for about 40 percent of all revenue. If that relationship changed, the effect would be immediate and severe. Rare earth prices are also set globally and can be pushed around by decisions made overseas, which is the exact dependency this company exists to escape.
