About Qualcomm
Qualcomm makes the chips that power most Android phones, working behind the scenes every time someone makes a call, opens an app, or connects to 5G. The company is now pushing that same chip expertise into cars, smart devices, and AI data centers, aiming to rely on phones far less than it used to.
The case for and against
Both sides of the story, in plain English.
- Cars and factories, not just phones
Qualcomm's chips are now riding in vehicles from Volkswagen, Toyota, and Hyundai, and combined automotive and connected-device revenue grew 28 percent year over year last quarter. Qualcomm has posted double digit automotive growth for 23 straight quarters, a steady new engine that has nothing to do with phone sales.
- Betting big on AI data centers
Qualcomm just signed Meta as a customer for its new server chips, adding to an existing deal with the maker of TikTok, and is targeting 15 billion dollars in data center revenue by 2029, up from almost nothing today. The company also spent 3.9 billion dollars buying an AI software startup to make it easier for developers to run their AI models on Qualcomm's chips.
- Phones are slowing down
Qualcomm's core phone chip business dropped 20 percent last quarter because a global shortage of memory chips drove up costs. Apple is also building more of its own chips in house, and Qualcomm expects to lose roughly 7 billion dollars of yearly revenue from Apple by 2028.
- The new businesses are still small
The data center business that excites investors barely exists yet. It needs to grow from a few hundred million dollars today to 15 billion dollars by 2029 to hit management's targets, so Qualcomm still needs the phone business to hold steady for a few more years while the new bets pay off.
