About AVITA Medical

AVITA Medical makes a skin-healing system called RECELL for burns and other serious wounds. Instead of grafting a big sheet of skin from somewhere else on the body, it turns a tiny sample of the patient's own skin into a spray that covers a much larger area. Think of it as growing a lawn from a few handfuls of seed instead of laying down sod.

The case for and against

Both sides of the story, in plain English.

Bull case
  • Record Growth

Quarterly sales hit a record 21.7 million dollars, up 18% from a year ago and up 13% from the quarter before. Gross margins are about 82%, very high for a medical device maker. The company just raised its full year sales forecast to between 86 and 89 million dollars.

  • Path To Breakeven

Cash burn fell from 9.9 million dollars to about 3.2 million in a single quarter, and management expects to stop burning cash by the end of this year. Medicare has also proposed a national payment rate for the RECELL procedure starting in 2027, which could make hospitals more comfortable using it.

Bear case
  • Thin Cash Cushion

The company ended the quarter with only about 11.1 million dollars in cash, while owing about 50 million dollars to a lender. It still lost 7.7 million dollars in the quarter, so the plan to break even has to work on schedule.

  • Wild Swings

The share price has more than tripled since early August, so a lot of good news is already baked in. Small, still-unprofitable medical companies like this one can move sharply in either direction on a single earnings report or a Medicare decision.
