About Johnson & Johnson
Johnson & Johnson is the largest healthcare company in the world, and you probably have its products at home. It makes prescription medicines for cancer, psoriasis, and depression, plus medical devices like heart rhythm tools, surgical robots, and contact lenses. Think of it as a hospital's entire supply closet and pharmacy under one roof, with the pharmacy side growing fastest.
The case for and against
Both sides of the story, in plain English.
- Medicine Engine
The medicine business grew about 8% last quarter even while its old blockbuster Stelara lost patent protection and fell sharply. Newer drugs for cancer and psoriasis are filling the gap, and total sales hit 25.4 billion dollars in the quarter, on track for more than 100 billion dollars this year for the first time in the company's history.
- Profit Machine
Johnson & Johnson keeps about 21 cents of every dollar of sales as profit and generated roughly 15 billion dollars of free cash this year through the first nine months. It just raised its 2026 outlook again and declared a 1.34 dollar quarterly dividend, so shareholders get paid while the company builds its next wave of drugs.
- Talc Bill Coming
The company has set aside 5.5 billion dollars to settle thousands of talc lawsuits, with the first payment of up to 3 billion dollars due in 2027. The deal only goes through if lawyers for at least 95% of the remaining claims sign on, so the legal cloud is not fully gone yet. That charge cut last quarter's reported earnings to just 9 cents a share.
- Slow Spots
The medical device side grew only 2.5% last quarter, far behind the 8% from medicines, and earnings per share before one-time items slipped about 7.5%. The company also says 4 to 4.5 billion dollars of products lose patent protection in 2027, and the stock trades near 23 times expected earnings, so there is little room for disappointment.
