About JPMorgan Chase & Co.

JPMorgan Chase is the largest bank in the world by market value, and it touches money almost everywhere it moves. It holds the checking accounts and credit cards of millions of families, lends to the biggest companies on earth, runs huge trading desks, and manages over 5 trillion dollars of investments for wealthy clients. Think of it as the financial plumbing for the American economy.

The case for and against

Both sides of the story, in plain English.

Bull case
  • Record Everything

In the second quarter of 2026 every single part of JPMorgan set a revenue record. Total revenue hit 57.3 billion dollars, up 28 percent from a year ago, and profit came in at 21.2 billion dollars. Even stripping out one-time gains, profit was 16.9 billion dollars, still up 13 percent. It is rare to see a company this size grow this fast.

  • Trading Boom

When markets get busy, JPMorgan gets paid. Trading revenue jumped 35 percent to 12.1 billion dollars, with the stock trading desk alone up 86 percent. Deal-making fees rose 30 percent to 3.3 billion dollars, the best showing since 2021. On top of that, the money-management arm now oversees 5.1 trillion dollars, up 18 percent in a year.

Bear case
  • Borrowed Sunshine

A lot of this quarter was one-time luck. A 4.6 billion dollar gain on Visa shares and 1 billion dollars of other investment gains padded the numbers. Trading booms also cool off fast when markets go quiet, and that business made up more than a fifth of all revenue this quarter. Do not expect 41 percent profit growth every quarter.

  • Credit Cracks

Banks only do as well as the people who owe them money. JPMorgan wrote off 2.4 billion dollars of bad loans this quarter, and its credit card loss rate sits at 3.34 percent. Costs are climbing too, with expenses up 15 percent to 27.3 billion dollars. If the economy slows, those losses grow while the trading windfall disappears.
