About Lenovo
Lenovo is the world's largest PC maker, holding the number one spot with about a quarter of the global market. Beyond laptops and desktops, it builds AI servers and data center hardware, owns the Motorola smartphone brand, and runs a fast-growing IT services arm. In short, it makes the hardware that powers both your desk and the data centers behind the AI boom.
The case for and against
Both sides of the story, in plain English.
- AI Engine
Lenovo's infrastructure business, the part that builds AI servers and data center hardware, grew 37% last quarter to 5.6 billion dollars and hit record profits. AI-related revenue jumped 84% year over year and now makes up 38% of the whole company, with management pointing to a 21 billion dollar pipeline of AI server orders.
- Desk Champion
Lenovo is the number one PC maker on earth at roughly 25% market share, five points ahead of its nearest rival. Last quarter total revenue grew 27% and net income doubled to 559 million dollars, while its services arm has now grown double digits for 20 straight quarters.
- Thin Margins
This is a hardware business, and hardware is a thin-margin game. Lenovo keeps only about 2 cents of profit on every dollar of sales, so when costs spike there is very little cushion to absorb the hit.
- Memory Squeeze
Memory chip prices have soared, with some types up as much as four times in recent months, and memory can be a fifth of what goes into a PC. That threatens both margins and demand if prices get passed on, and the PC market is cyclical with shipments expected to fall around 10% this year.
