About Lumen Technologies
Lumen owns one of America's biggest fiber optic networks, the glass cables that move internet data at the speed of light. It just sold off a big chunk of its old home internet business to AT&T, betting everything on becoming the digital highway that connects data centers and powers AI.
The case for and against
Both sides of the story, in plain English.
- Cash Cannon
Lumen closed the sale of its home fiber business across eleven states to AT&T for 5.75 billion dollars in cash, netting about 5.72 billion after costs. That booked a 596 million dollar gain this quarter and handed them a war chest to pay down debt and pour into the AI network buildout. Selling the past to fund the future.
- Profitable Core
Strip out the sold business and Lumen still produced 2.84 billion dollars of revenue with 567 million dollars of operating profit. That is a roughly 20 percent operating margin on the part of the company they are keeping, plus fresh multi year contracts to carry AT&T's network traffic and a 20 year fiber lease deal.
- Debt Drag
Lumen paid 225 million dollars in interest this quarter and took another 226 million dollar hit retiring old debt early. That is over 450 million dollars gone to the balance sheet in three months alone, and it is the single biggest reason a profitable operating business still lands in the red.
- Shrinking Sales
Revenue slid to 2.9 billion dollars and the company's annual sales are still falling around 5 percent. Lumen also lost 200 million dollars this quarter, or 20 cents a share, and booked 729 million dollars of liabilities for contract terms priced below market. Growth has not arrived yet.
