About PayPal
PayPal runs the digital wallet you tap at checkout online, plus Venmo for sending money to friends. It connects shoppers and merchants in about 200 countries, handling everything from card payments to crypto.
The case for and against
Both sides of the story, in plain English.
- Big Reset Underway
PayPal just split itself into three sharper businesses: Checkout, Venmo and consumer finance, and a payments and crypto unit. New CEO Enrique Lores is bringing in fresh leaders and a Chief AI Transformation Officer to speed things up. A simpler structure means faster decisions and a real shot at a turnaround.
- Profit Machine
Even with revenue creeping along, PayPal squeezes serious money out of every transaction, with net margins around 15.78 percent. The company processes more than 30 billion transactions a year and still holds the top spot in online checkout. That cash flow funds buybacks that quietly boost the value of every remaining share.
- Growth Stuck
Revenue grew just 4.32 percent last year, the slowest pace in PayPal's history, and the user base has barely budged at around 439 million. Younger shoppers are picking Apple Pay, Klarna, and Shopify Pay instead. A reorganization helps, but it does not fix the demand problem.
- Squeezed By Giants
Apple Pay, Google Pay, Stripe, and Adyen are all crowding the same checkout button, and PayPal's take rate has dropped over 40 percent since 2015. The looming shift to AI shopping agents could make the familiar PayPal button matter even less. Less pricing power means thinner profits down the road.
