About Rocket Lab USA Inc
Rocket Lab builds and launches rockets and spacecraft. Think of it as a one stop shop for getting things into space, from the rocket that lifts a satellite to the satellite itself and the parts inside it. It is now pushing further, buying satellite companies so it can build, launch, and operate its own space networks for commercial, government, and defense customers.
The case for and against
Both sides of the story, in plain English.
- Record Ramp
Revenue hit a record 234 million dollars last quarter, up 62 percent from a year ago and 34 million dollars higher than the previous record. The backlog of signed contracts also hit a record 2.36 billion dollars, up 137 percent. Management guided to another record quarter ahead, expecting 250 to 265 million dollars.
- Defense Darling
Rocket Lab won a 397 million dollar contract to build spacecraft and launch them for a U.S. Space Force program that tracks airborne threats from space. It also picked up more than 160 million dollars to build three large satellites for government customers. Launch backlog is now over 90 missions, the biggest in company history.
- Still Unprofitable
The company lost 49 million dollars last quarter, and operating costs of 142 million dollars ran well above the 85 million dollars of gross profit it earned. Growth is real, but every quarter still ends in the red, and profits are not promised anytime soon.
- Big Bets
Rocket Lab just closed two acquisitions and agreed to buy satellite phone company Iridium, a huge move that is far more complex than launching rockets. On top of that, its new Neutron rocket still has not flown, with delivery to the launch pad targeted for late 2026. Any delay or messy integration could sting.
