About Rocket Lab USA Inc
Rocket Lab builds and launches rockets and spacecraft. Think of it as a one stop shop for getting things into space, from the rocket that lifts a satellite to the satellite itself and the parts inside it. It is becoming one of the most important names in the fast growing space economy, serving both commercial customers and government defense programs.
The case for and against
Both sides of the story, in plain English.
- Backlog Booming
Revenue grew 63 percent year over year in the most recent quarter to a record 200 million dollars. Even better, the company is sitting on a record 2.2 billion dollar backlog of signed contracts, more than double a year ago. That backlog means a lot of future revenue is already booked before the work is even done.
- Defense Tailwind
Rocket Lab is winning serious government work, including a 190 million dollar deal to run 20 launches for missile defense testing and a partnership with defense company Anduril. Defense spending tends to be steady and long lasting, which gives the business a more reliable foundation than commercial space alone.
- Priced For Perfection
The stock trades at roughly 100 times its yearly sales, an extreme price tag. The market is paying today for success it expects many years from now. If growth slows even slightly, the stock could fall hard because expectations are already sky high.
- Still Burning Cash
Rocket Lab is not profitable. Net margins are negative 27 percent and the company burned through about 50 million dollars of cash last quarter. Its new Neutron rocket has not flown yet, and any delay to that first flight could shake investor confidence.
