About SoFi Technologies
SoFi is a digital bank and financial app that lets people borrow, save, spend, invest, and protect their money in one place. They started as a student loan refinancing company and have grown into a full-service online bank with 14.7 million members. Think of them as a tech-first alternative to Chase or Wells Fargo built for younger Americans.
The case for and against
Both sides of the story, in plain English.
- Member Magnet
SoFi added 1.1 million new members in Q1 2026, growing total members 35 percent year over year to 14.7 million. Forty-three percent of new products were sold to existing members, meaning customers stay and buy more once they sign up. Net revenue grew 41 percent to a record 1.1 billion dollars and adjusted EBITDA grew 62 percent.
- Record Loans
Loan originations hit a record 12.2 billion dollars in Q1 2026, with personal loans at 8.3 billion, student loans at 2.6 billion (more than double last year), and home loans at 1.2 billion (also more than double). Personal loan charge-offs improved 28 basis points year over year, meaning credit quality is getting better even as the loan book grows fast.
- Sky High Beta
SoFi shares are extremely volatile, with a five-year beta of 2.25. That means the stock typically moves about twice as much as the broader market in either direction. If interest rates spike, credit weakens, or fintech sentiment sours, SoFi tends to drop hard. Not a stock for nervous investors.
- Crypto Crossover Risk
SoFi is now minting its own stablecoin called SoFiUSD and pushing into digital asset settlement with Mastercard. Crypto adds a real new revenue stream but also a new layer of regulatory risk on top of the bank's existing oversight. Profit margins are also still slim at 13 percent net, so any unexpected expense or credit hit hits the bottom line fast.
