About Uber

Uber is the app that connects people who need rides with drivers, and now also delivers food, groceries, and pretty much anything else you need. Think of it as a digital matchmaker for getting around and getting stuff delivered, all in one place on your phone.

The case for and against

Both sides of the story, in plain English.

Bull case
  • Türkiye Takeover

Uber just announced it's buying Getir's delivery business in Türkiye, a country with over 85 million people and a booming digital economy. Getir invented ultrafast grocery delivery and works with over 87,000 business partners. Combining it with Uber's existing Trendyol Go service instantly makes Uber the dominant delivery player in a huge growing market.

  • Profit Powerhouse

Uber is finally a real money-making machine. Revenue is growing 18 percent a year, and the company keeps about 19 cents of profit on every dollar it brings in. After years of burning cash, Uber has flipped the script and is now squeezing serious profit out of its massive global network.

Bear case
  • Deal Risk

The Getir acquisition still needs regulatory approval, and there is no guarantee it closes smoothly or on time. Big international deals can drag on for months and sometimes get blocked or forced to make changes. If regulators push back, Uber could spend money and management attention without getting the full benefit.

  • Robotaxi Race

Self driving cars from Waymo and Tesla are rolling out in more cities every month, and they could eventually cut human drivers out of the equation. Uber is partnering with a bunch of these robotaxi companies to stay relevant, but there is no guarantee it ends up the winner. If riders start booking robotaxis directly through other apps, Uber's huge network advantage could shrink.
