About USA Rare Earth

USA Rare Earth wants to build an all-American supply chain for the metals inside magnets, the tiny but powerful parts in electric motors, missiles, and robots. It digs rare earths from a mine in Brazil, turns them into metals in the UK, and is building a magnet factory in Oklahoma. Think of it as trying to be the one-stop shop that China has been for decades.

The case for and against

Both sides of the story, in plain English.

Bull case
  • Government Backed

Washington is a customer, lender, and shareholder. A 15 year deal sets minimum prices for key metals, including 110 dollars per kilogram for neodymium and praseodymium, rising 2 percent a year. The company also holds about 1.53 billion dollars in cash.

  • Real Mine Now

The Serra Verde deal closed in September and gave the company a working mine in Brazil that makes both light and heavy rare earths outside of Asia. Management targets about 1.8 billion dollars of yearly EBITDA by the end of 2030. The Oklahoma magnet plant already has 2,500 metric tons of customer interest.

Bear case
  • Burning Cash

Sales were only 5.8 million dollars last quarter and the company lost money on each sale, with costs higher than revenue. The first half net loss was 80 million dollars. Plans call for raising about 1.55 billion dollars in new shares by 2027, which could shrink your slice.

  • Execution Risk

Round Top in Texas is not expected to produce until late 2028, and that date could slip. The company needs to run mines, metal plants, and magnet factories across four countries at once, under a brand new CEO. China has also put the company on an export control list, which makes some supplies harder to get.
