About Cava Group

CAVA is like Chipotle, but for Mediterranean food. You walk down the line and build your own bowl or pita with fresh veggies, grilled proteins, and dips like its famous Crazy Feta. Its founders still run it, and it just opened its 500th restaurant across 31 states and Washington, D.C.

The case for and against

Both sides of the story, in plain English.

Bull case
  • Five Hundred Strong

CAVA opened 24 new restaurants this quarter and hit 500 locations ahead of schedule. That's about 20% more than a year ago, and the newest spots are doing better than the company expected. It now plans 76 to 78 openings this year, up from its earlier goal.

  • Sales Keep Sizzling

Revenue jumped 22% this quarter to about 354 million dollars. The average restaurant now brings in about 3.1 million dollars a year, up from 2.9 million, and nearly 4 in 10 dollars come from online and app orders. CAVA also raised its full-year outlook for sales at older restaurants to 6% to 7% growth.

Bear case
  • Profit Squeeze

CAVA is selling more but keeping a little less of each dollar. Its profit at the restaurant level slipped to 23.4% of sales, down from 24.6% a year ago, because of higher worker pay, more delivery orders, and repairs. Overall profit actually fell to 13.2 million dollars from 14.7 million.

  • Food Scare Fallout

Worries about Cyclospora, a stomach bug spread through fresh produce, made some diners nervous about veggie-heavy meals. CAVA says that knocked about 1.5 percentage points off sales growth at older restaurants, which grew just 3.1%. For a brand built on fresh ingredients, food scares hit close to home, and the stock tends to swing much harder than the overall market.
