About HIVE Digital Technologies
HIVE Digital Technologies is a Bitcoin miner that runs its machines on cheap, clean hydro power in Paraguay, Sweden, and Canada. It is now using that same power and its data centers to build an AI cloud business called BUZZ, renting out high end chips to companies that need to train artificial intelligence. In short, it is one small company trying to ride two of the biggest trends at once, crypto and AI.
The case for and against
Both sides of the story, in plain English.
- Two Booms, One Stock
Revenue exploded 158 percent last year to almost 298 million dollars as HIVE nearly quadrupled its Bitcoin mining power and produced more than 2,800 Bitcoin. The whole operation runs on low cost hydro electricity, which keeps the cost of mining each coin down.
- The AI Pivot
HIVE is turning its power and data centers into an AI cloud business called BUZZ, which grew about 94 percent last year and now has 35 million dollars of contracts locked in. A new three year deal with Bell and Cohere worth around 220 million dollars should push its contracted AI revenue above 100 million dollars.
- Burning Cash
HIVE lost about 148 million dollars last year and ended with only around 23 million dollars in cash. Its planned Toronto AI factory could cost roughly 3.5 billion dollars, far more than the company has, so it will need heavy borrowing or new shares to pull it off.
- Bitcoin's Shadow
This stock still lives and dies with the price of Bitcoin, and it tends to swing almost four times as hard as the overall market. When crypto prices fell recently, the mining business briefly lost money, so expect a very bumpy ride.
