About Vince
Vince sells polished everyday clothing, like cashmere sweaters and silk blouses, through department stores, its own 53 shops and its website. In August it also took over the running of OVO, the streetwear label co-founded by the rapper Drake.
The case for and against
Both sides of the story, in plain English.
- Sales Are Speeding Up
Sales grew 11.7% last quarter to 81.8 million dollars, and both the department store side and the company's own shops and website grew by double digits. Sales at its own shops and website were up 18.4% on a like-for-like basis. Management raised its full-year sales growth forecast for the Vince brand to 8% to 10%, up from 3% to 6% back in April.
- A Streetwear Side Door
In August Vince took over the running of OVO, a streetwear brand that sold nearly 50 million dollars last year. It paid only a nominal amount of cash for the operating business, plus 6 million dollars for a 5% stake in the brand's name rights. Management sees OVO sales passing 100 million dollars by fiscal 2030 and expects the deal to add to profit in fiscal 2027.
- One-Time Profit Boost
Last quarter's 60.9% gross margin was lifted by a one-time 10.4 million dollar tariff refund. Without it the margin was 48.2%, below 50.4% a year earlier because of higher product and shipping costs. Profit is thin in a normal year: last fiscal year's net margin was about 2%.
- Small and Swingy
This is a tiny company, worth about 150 million dollars, so the share price can lurch. It went from about 5 dollars to over 13 dollars in four weeks. Vince also rents its own brand name, paying royalties with a guaranteed minimum of 11 million dollars a year, and it still has to prove it can run a second brand.
